Installing QZ Tray for Auto-Printing (With Security Certificate)

Modified on Mon, 28 Sep at 3:33 PM

QZ Tray connects your browser to local devices and supports auto printing from Droptop - receipt printers, label printers, and cash drawers. Droptop supports two ways to run it, and it’s entirely up to you which you use:

  • QZ Tray 2.1.6 (Droptop's copied windows version - no certificate install needed):  This is Droptop's version of QZ Tray which removes the need for security certificate installation. However, it's locked to windows and version 2.1.6. If you would prefer this, you can install here: How to Install and Run QZ Tray (No Certificate)
  • Newest QZ Tray Versions + Mac/Linux/Windows + certificate signing (this guide): run the latest QZ Tray version right from qz.io. It stays up to date, receives security fixes, and works with IT policies that disallow modified builds. It needs a one-time certificate install step on each computer that prints.

Both print identically once set up. This guide covers the second option.

What certificate signing does?

  • With signing on, Droptop signs each print request and the official QZ Tray accepts it silently with no “Action Required / Allow?” prompts.
  • Without it, the official QZ Tray would prompt on every request. The 2.1.6 version sidesteps this a different way, which is why it never needed a certificate.

There are two parts: a one-time setup on each computer and then a setting to be toggled on in Droptop.

Part 1 - Setup

1. Install the latest version of QZ Tray. You can download and install from https://qz.io/download/. If this computer currently runs the Droptop 2.1.6 version, uninstall it first, then install the official build.

2. You’ll need the file: droptop-qz-certificate.crt
Please kindly reach out to us via live chat or email (support@droptop.io) to get the certificate.
From there, any of the options below can be used to trust the certificate:

Option A - Site Manager (recommended)

  1. Right-click the QZ Tray icon in the system tray → Advanced → Site Manager…
  2. Go to the Allowed tab → click + (Add).
  3. Select the droptop-qz-certificate.crt file.
  4. Confirm. “Droptop Inc” now appears in the Allowed list.
  5. Restart QZ Tray.

Option B - override.crt (good for imaging many machines)

  1. Copy droptop-qz-certificate.crt into the QZ Tray install folder, renamed to override.crt:
    • Windows: C:\Program Files\QZ Tray\override.crt
    • macOS: /Applications/QZ Tray.app/Contents/Resources/override.crt
    • Linux: /opt/qz-tray/override.crt
  2. Restart QZ Tray.

3. With QZ Tray running, open Droptop and print. You should not see any trust prompt. If one still appears, the certificate isn’t trusted yet. Please refer to Step 2, and make sure you installed the latest version of QZ Tray, not the 2.1.6 build.

Part 2 - Enable Setting in Droptop

  1. Go to Account Settings → Operations → Settings → Integrations & Payments.
  2. Under QZ Tray Settings, turn on Use QZ Tray Certificate Signing.
  3. Save.
  4. Refresh Droptop (reload the browser tab) on each computer that prints. Sessions already open keep their previous signing mode until reloaded.

Enable the toggle only after Part 1 is done on every device. If you enable signing before the certificate is trusted, the official QZ Tray will prompt on each request until the certificate is installed.
